The Red Square

The historical, cultural and tourist center of the city of Tobolsk is Red Square. From the south it is limited to the ensemble of the Tobolsk Kremlin, from the west – the Tobolsk prison castle, from the north – Sverdlovsky lane and S. Remezov square, from the east – Nikolsky vzvoz. In the XIX – early. XX centuries the square was called Cathedral.

On Red Square, in the center of the Kremlin, there is a monument to the outstanding cartographer, historian, artist, architect and chronicler Semyon Ulyanovich Remezov (1642 – after 1720), who forever left his mark on the history of Tobolsk and Siberia. The author of the monument, opened in the summer of 1993, is the Moscow sculptor Oleg Komov. “S.U. Remezov from grateful Tobolyaks ”reads the inscription on the pedestal as a sign of recognition and respect for the brilliant fellow countryman, the author of the first atlases of Siberia, the architect of the Gostiny Dvor and the renters that have survived to this day and adorn the Tobolsk Kremlin.

The northern part of Red Square is a favorite venue for citywide celebrations and festivals.
