The Museum of Public Education of the Tyumen region is located in a unique historical building, a monument of history and architecture of Tobolsk, the former Provincial classical gymnasium.
The museum was founded in 1987. In 2016, an updated exhibition “School of the Tobolsk Province in the XVIII – early XX centuries” was opened in the premises of the former House Church in the Name of St. Innocent of the Irkutsk Gymnasium building.

The city of Tobolsk, being the capital of a vast territory during the development of Siberia, is also the “cradle of the enlightenment of Siberia”, the birthplace of the first secular and spiritual schools. The materials of the museum’s exposition reveal the process of education development in the region from the appearance of the first schools in the XVIII century to the opening of professional educational institutions, in particular, the Tobolsk Teachers ‘ Institute in 1916.

Photos, books, documents tell about the Tobolsk Men’s Gymnasium, the Mariinsky Women’s Gymnasium and other educational institutions, as well as about the outstanding teachers of Tobolsk. In the memorial office of the director of the gymnasium, the original table of the director and the table of meetings of the pedagogical council, writing instruments and various devices from the physics room, notebooks with the works of the high school student S. Kulev, books from the personal library of the director of schools of the Tobolsk province G. Ya.Malarevsky with his autographs and many other unique exhibits are displayed.

Preserved interiors of the gymnasium building – high arched vaults, cast-iron staircase con. XIX century, cabinets for books and equipment, signs with the names of classrooms help to convey the atmosphere of the Tobolsk provincial classical gymnasium.
