The First Museum of Siberia

The Tobolsk Museum was founded on April 20, 1870 by the secretary of the provincial Statistical Committee, Ivan Nikolaevich Yushkov. In 1889, a special building was built for the museum, designed by the Tobolsk architect P. P. Aplecheyev. Since 1891, the museum has received the status of a Provincial museum. Under the personal patronage of the heir to the throne, Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich (the future Emperor Nicholas II), the museum was a scientific and cultural center of Siberia.

Today, the expositions of the Provincial Museum tell about the history of the formation of the museum business in Tobolsk. Visitors can see unique exhibits from the first collections of the museum: ethnographic, archaeological, paleontological, natural science and art.
