The Znamensky Monastery is the oldest in Western Siberia, it was founded in 1596.
In 1623, it occupied its present position in the foothill part.

Since 1770, the monastery has gradually become the main religious educational center of Siberia. The Slavonic-Latin school, transformed into a seminary, was transferred here from the Sofia Court.

The names of many outstanding figures are associated with the Tobolsk seminary: its teachers were one of the founders of Russian sinology N. Ya. Bichurin and the Decembrist F. B. Wolf; its graduates: the Siberian historian P. A. Slovtsov, the artist and local historian M. S. Znamensky.

In 1730, the construction of the Kazan-Nikolskaya Church began, which soon began to build a fraternal building with a hospital and cells (1734-1741).

By 1768, the church was completed in one connection with the bell tower. In the same year, the fraternal building was continued with the addition of a kitchen, and in 1784, a second floor was erected above it for the apartments of the abbot Archimandrite Elijah. The building was damaged in a fire in 1788, but was repaired.

The existing stone building was built in 1870 as a result of the unification of the seminary buildings and the dining hall, which were previously built in the early 19th century, into one solid block.

The Transfiguration Cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery was built in 1900-1905 on the site of the ancient stone Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, built in 1685-1691.

The monastery is currently awaiting restoration.
