Abalaksky Znamensky monastery is located on the high bank of the Irtysh River, at a distance of 26 kilometers from Tobolsk.

The history of its foundation is connected with the miraculous icon of the Abalak Mother of God.

Very quickly, the news of the appearance of the miraculous icon spread not only in Siberia, but also throughout Russia. Only in the XVII century, more than 130 cases of gracious help from the miraculous icon were recorded.

Gradually, a temple complex was formed in Abalak. In 1683-1691, a stone cathedral was built in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”. In 1749-50, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built to the right of the Znamenskaya Church. By 1759, the construction of the bell tower with the church of St. Mary of Egypt was completed.

In 1783, the Znamensky Abalaksky Monastery was established on the site of the Abalaksky parish.

The Abalak Monastery remains one of the spiritual centers of Siberia and is included in the list of holy places of Russia.
