The ensemble of the Tobolsk prison castle was built according to the project of the Tobolsk provincial architect Weigel in 1855.

The complex of the Prison Castle consists of five buildings: the administrative building (headquarters); the observation building, which later housed the prison hospital; building No. 1 with the prison church of Alexander Nevsky served for the detention of dangerous criminal recidivists; building No. 2 housed political prisoners before the revolution, there was also a women’s department; building No. 3 was originally built for prisoners traveling further east.

In Soviet times, the prison was used for its intended purpose.

In 1989, it was decided to transfer the Tobolsk prison to Harp, in the circumpolar Urals.

Currently, a museum is opened in the building No. 1, the expositions of which introduce the history of the Tobolsk prison castle of the pre-revolutionary and Soviet period.

In the hospital building there is a Museum of rare books, and in the building of the punishment cells there is a hostel “Prisoner”.
