The new building of the Tobolsk provincial Gymnasium

The new building of the Tobolsk Men’s Provincial Gymnasium was built in 1893. The white building of the gymnasium, with its balconies and columns, looked like a real palace on the slope of the green hillside. In 1899, during his visit to Tobolsk, D. I. Mendeleev visited it. The famous Tobolyak commented on the new building of the gymnasium: “This building would be an ornament for the capital as well.”

In 1916, a Teacher’s institute was opened here, and in 1921 – the Tobolsk Pedagogical Technical School, later transformed into the Tobolsk Pedagogical Institute named after D. I. Mendeleev.

Currently, the building houses the “Museum of Public Education”, whose expositions introduce the process of education development in the region from the appearance of Peter’s schools to the opening of professional educational institutions.
