Opposite the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is the house of the merchant Khudyakov. Built in the late 1750s, it retains the features of the provincial Baroque.

The famous writer Alexander Nikolaevich Radishchev stayed in this house while in Tobolsk, following his exile in Ilimsk for his work “Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow”.

After returning from exile (1797), in his projects of legal reforms (1801– 1802), he again advocated the abolition of serfdom. Following the exile, Alexander Nikolaevich kept a diary (the road from Moscow to Tobolsk lasted more than 3 months). The exact date of Radishchev’s arrival is unknown. It is known that, on December 17, he arrived in Tyumen, and the first letter from Tobolsk is dated December 21.

Radishchev and his family left Tobolsk on July 30, 1791. This was followed by a six-year stay in Ilimsk.
Radishchev returned to Tobolsk with his family on April 1, 1797. On the way, Elizaveta Rubanovskaya caught a cold and fell seriously ill, and on April 7, she died of the disease and was
buried in the Zavalny cemetery – the grave was not preserved, and A. N. Radishchev and his five children left Tobolsk for good. Later, he wrote, ” This city has an everlasting attraction for me.”
