The house of the Governor-General originally belonged to the Tobolsk merchant of the First guild Kuklin, after whose bankruptcy in 1817, it was transferred to the state department. Soon it housed the Main Directorate of Western Siberia and the provincial government.

In 1916, the house organized a department to help our prisoners of war in enemy countries. Tobolsk residents organized a workshop here, where they sewed linen for the wounded until late in the evening.

From August 13, 1917 to April 13, 1918, the family of the former Emperor of Russia Nicholas II lived in the house.

After the departure of the family of Nicholas II to Yekaterinburg, the Local Executive Committee of the Provincial Council of Deputies moved into the house.

After the civil war in the history of the former governor’s house, there was a peaceful period associated with the work of the departments of the District Executive Committee. Subsequently, it housed the administration of the Tobolsk district.

In 1996, the only cabinet-museum of Emperor Nicholas II in Siberia was opened in the Governor’s House.
Since 2018, the Museum of the Family of Emperor Nicholas II has been opened in the building.
