It connects the upper and lower posad of Tobolsk Pryamskaya (Sofiyskiy, Bazarny) street with a picturesque building of the rent (from the word rent) spread over it. It is no coincidence that the other name of this building is the treasury.

The building was built in 1717 according to the project of the outstanding Tobolyak S.U. Remezov. Due to the fact that captured Swedes took part in the construction of the building, it is also called the Swedish Chamber.

The first wooden staircase was built in 1671. In 1780, according to the project of Alexander Guchev, the banks of the ravine were reinforced with massive brick walls 110 meters long, their height in the highest part was 14.6 meters, and ended with low obelisk pedestals.
Now it is 205 steps of a wooden staircase, and higher up is a medieval gorge, which is formed by high brick walls and a cobblestone pavement.
